When Old Insulation Needs to Go
Insulation removal and replacement has been one of the most needed services in St. Petersburg since the fall of 2024. Hurricane Helene set a record storm tide at the city's tide gauge, and Milton brought nearly 19 inches of rain to the city, with more than 5 inches falling in a single hour. Damaged roofs let water into attics, and surge reached homes along the bay and on the beaches.
Why wet insulation comes out
Wet loose fill and batts mat down and lose their insulating value, hold water against drywall and framing, and can grow mold. Adding new insulation on top just hides the problem. Rodent-fouled insulation carries odors and contamination and should also be removed.
How we remove it
We vacuum loose fill out of the attic with a high-powered unit into bags or a truck, bag batts by hand, and cut out damaged foam where needed. We protect the house along the path to the attic. Old vermiculite that may contain asbestos is tested and handled by a licensed abatement contractor, not by our crews.
Replacing it
Once the attic is clean and dry and any roof leaks are fixed, we seal the ceiling and reinsulate: blown-in on the attic floor or foam on the roof deck, depending on the house. If you are a Duke Energy Florida customer, check whether the attic qualifies for the program's rebate before reinsulating.
Signs insulation needs to come out
A musty smell in the attic, stained ceilings, insulation that looks flattened or clumped, droppings or nesting, and a roof leak that went unnoticed for a while all point to insulation that should be replaced. Pulling a few samples and checking moisture tells us how much needs to go, so you are not paying to remove material that is still good.
Cost
HomeAdvisor lists removal at $1 to $2 per square foot, a typical job at $600 to $1,200 and removal plus replacement at about $1,852 on average. Spray foam removal runs $1.00 to $2.50 per square foot (HomeGuide) and up to about $5 hand-chipped (Fixr).

Insulation Removal & Replacement Questions
My attic got wet in Milton. Does all the insulation need to go?
Usually only the wet or damaged areas, but leaks often spread farther than they look. We check and tell you how much really needs to come out.
Can I add new insulation over wet insulation?
No. Wet material should be removed and the attic dried first.
How long does removal take?
Most attic removals take a day; reinsulation can often follow the next day once things are dry.
What about vermiculite?
It should be tested before anyone disturbs it. If it contains asbestos, a licensed abatement contractor removes it.
